Local residents who died recently include:
Marianne Lore Kohn Arnstein, 96, a longtime resident of Atherton and community leader who escaped Nazi Germany with her family in 1937, who received her teaching credential from San Francisco State University, and who was known for her advocacy for social justice, her legendary sense of humor, and her dedication to cultivating a beautiful garden on her family property, served as Board President of the Las Lomitas School District, chaired the San Mateo County Juvenile Justice Commission, and led the San Francisco Bay Area Girl Scout Council as President. She was also an active volunteer for the Committee for Art at Stanford, including the role of Chair, and worked as Development Director for Planned Parenthood of Santa Clara County. Marianne passed away on June 30, 2024, at her home, where she had lived for over 65 years.
Frank Satoshi Sasagawa, 98, a lifelong resident of Palo Alto, California, who was deeply proud of his Japanese American heritage, spent his entire career at The West Bay Sanitation District. Known for his passion for golf, which he played into his late 90s, Frank was also an avid bowler, basketball player, and coach. He organized the Northern California JACL Junior Olympic Track & Field meets for many years. A skilled engineer, he built custom playhouses and remodeled his College Terrace home. Frank, affectionately known as “Jay,” died on July 25, 2024, in Palo Alto.
Gloria Ramirez, 93, a longtime resident of Mountain View who was a founding member of St. Athanasius Parish and devoted much of her life to faith and community, died on July 25, 2024, at her home. Born in Colorado City, Texas, Gloria moved to Mountain View in 1947, where she graduated from Mountain View High in 1949. A former member of the Helpers of the Holy Souls Convent, she traveled extensively with the nuns before returning to Mountain View. Gloria was a bilingual teacher’s aide at Northwood School in San Jose, known for her dedication to education and her compassion in nurturing young minds. She was beloved for her generosity, her unwavering faith, and the love she shared with her family.
Janelle Tynan, 82, a longtime resident of Mountain View who dedicated 37 years to teaching in the Mountain View School District, who was known for her innovative teaching methods, her love of travel — especially to England — her passion for theater and high tea, and her deep connections with students, colleagues, and family, died on July 10, 2024, in Sunnyvale. In retirement, she continued to mentor new teachers and enjoyed decorative painting, often sharing her creations with loved ones.
