Nathan “Buddy” Kavanagh’s goal for his senior year at Calaveras High School was to walk off Frank Meyer Field one final time on graduation day with no excuses.

Kavanagh didn’t want any excuses when it came to his athletic life. He didn’t want any excuses when it came to his academic life, social life or the effort he put into anything he did.

With the goal of having no excuses, Kavanagh put together a senior year that even the most critical person could be proud of.

When Kavanagh’s name was called at graduation, he received his diploma as an honor roll student, a league, section, NorCal and state football champion, the Mother Lode League’s top lineman, and a league and section champion in track and field.

Needless to say, Kavanagh, the 2026 Calaveras Enterprise Calaveras High School Male Athlete of the Year, achieved his goal of having no excuses during his senior year.

“My senior year was the best I could imagine,” Kavanagh said. “I did everything I could. I tried everything that I wanted to. This year has been great to me, and I’m so grateful to have had such a memorable year. Yeah, I’m leaving with no excuses, and I’m glad.”

From San Andreas to state

On Nov. 15, 2024, Kavanagh sat on one knee in the cold following a difficult 64-7 loss to the Sonora Wildcats in the second round of the playoffs. The Red Hawks had just completed their best season in years, but Kavanagh and his teammates were left out in the cold, falling short of their goal of reaching the section championship game.

When Kavanagh returned to the gridiron for his senior year, he was determined not to feel the same level of disappointment he experienced following the 57-point playoff loss the previous year.

“After last year’s season with our bad loss to Sonora, my personal goal was to at least make it to the section final game, and we did,” Kavanagh said. “After that, it was just smooth sailing.”

Kavanagh was Calaveras’ starting center and defensive tackle. For Calaveras head coach Manny Mossa, having a center he could trust gave him one less thing to worry about.

“The center is a really important position when you don’t have that guy, and we’ve had that guy for quite a few years now, and we never had to worry about a lot of little things,” Mossa said. “We knew the snap would be good, and the shotgun snap would be on time. He was nails every game, and what he did in the weight room and offseason, off the field, to me, just went a long way as the season went on.”

After starting the season 1-2, Calaveras picked up back-to-back wins over Riverbank and River Islands, setting up a huge league clash with the defending state champion Summerville Bears. With the top spot in the league standings, along with the No. 1 ranking in the division, on the line, Calaveras went to Tuolumne and dismantled the Bears 21-7 for one of the most significant wins of Kavanagh’s career.

“It was obviously the most important game for me at the time,” Kavanagh said. “I was just going in there, not wanting to do anything stupid to jeopardize the team’s chances. And we went in and didn’t do anything stupid. They were the ones jumping offsides and being dumb. We played solid, and we went in there and kicked their butt.”

The win over Summerville didn’t come without long-term ramifications. Late in the fourth quarter, Kavanagh suffered an injury to his right arm, which changed the trajectory of his senior year.

“I was in the backfield, on the ground, and all of a sudden I saw the ball,” Kavanagh said. “So, instincts kicked in, and I went to grab it. Then someone jumped on it, and it (elbow) just went backward and hyperextended.”

Kavanagh never fully recovered from the arm injury until the spring. The injury forced him to miss one game, and when Kavanagh returned to the offensive line, his concerns weren’t about blocking whoever was in front of him but rather making sure his snaps got to the quarterback like they did before he got hurt.

“For me, it was more about snapping because I could block pretty well with my left arm and then, like, half my right arm,” Kavanagh said. “Most defenders couldn’t really get by. So, for me, it was just really the snapping portion because every snap, it was just so quick and took so much force to get it back there and get up. It just hurt every single time.”

Calaveras went on to win the Mother Lode League title with a 7-0 record and, as the No. 1 team in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division VII playoffs, beat Le Grand 33-6 in the opening round. However, in the lopsided win, senior linebacker Kodey Paulson suffered an injury that limited his playing time for the remainder of the postseason.

With Paulson sidelined by an injury, Kavanagh was asked to step up and take over at linebacker in the semifinal game. While Kavanagh accepted the challenge, he did a good job of hiding his nerves from his coaches and teammates.

“The first game, I was terrified,” Kavanagh said. “I was scared out of my mind. I’m glad my team was there to help me, coach me up and get me used to the speed of a varsity linebacker because it’s different from a scrimmage at Central Catholic or a JV game.”

With Kavanagh starting at both center and linebacker, Calaveras punched its ticket to the section title game, where no Calaveras team had ever captured a victory. However, Kavanagh wasn’t ready to make any excuses, and his teammates followed his lead. Calaveras won its first-ever section championship with a 27-12 victory over Linden at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.

“It was the greatest moment ever,” Kavanagh said. “I think the only thing that could top it would be the state game. But hearing Coach (Scott) Anderson’s stories about all the times they got close or almost made it and lost by one point or whatever, it just pushed us so hard to get there and strive for that game. And after we did it, it was just a celebration. It was just the greatest time.”

Kavanagh and Calaveras then won the CIF State Division 5-A NorCal championship at Frank Meyer Field in front of the hometown fans with a 35-7 victory over Miramonte, setting up a state championship clash with Bishop Union.

As Kavanagh and his teammates made the long trip from San Andreas to Fullerton to play in the biggest game in school history, there was no doubt in his mind that they would return home as state champions.

“Going down there, we didn’t think they could handle our style of football,” Kavanagh said. “We watched film, we watched how they played, we watched how we played, and we just thought they couldn’t handle it. So, we went out there, we smacked them in the mouth, obviously, and they couldn’t handle it. And we went out there and we beat them.”

When the clock hit zero and Calaveras’ 42-21 victory over Bishop Union was official, Kavanagh had no idea what to do or how to act now that he was a state champion.

“I wasn’t thinking about anything,” Kavanagh said. “I was just so excited in the moment, and I just wanted to be with the team and celebrate with them at that time.”

Kavanagh’s senior football season included being a member of the best team in school history. He was also named the Mother Lode League’s Lineman of the Year. When Kavanagh walked off the football field for the final time, he did so without any excuses.

“We wanted it, we put in the work for it, and we made it happen,” Kavanagh said.

Wrestling with injury

For the final 10 weeks of the football season, Kavanagh played with an injured arm. Game after game, he battled through the pain and did all he could to stay on the field and help his team achieve greatness.

Kavanagh was ready to repeat that process, only this time on the wrestling mat.

After a strong junior season, Kavanagh was viewed as one of the top returning wrestlers in the Mother Lode League. Unfortunately for Kavanagh, his senior season lasted just one match.

In his first and only match of the season, Kavanagh realized his arm was still so badly injured that he could not use it while wrestling. The tough decision was made to end his season because of the injury.

“Yeah, my arm was definitely worse,” Kavanagh said. “I got out there, and just the amount of strain wrestling puts on your body, I didn’t expect it to be that bad on my arm, and it was. It wasn’t good after that. My senior season was pretty much over before it began. It was really sad, but I just accepted it, and then I just turned it around and tried to support the team the best I could.”

Instead of focusing on the reality that his wrestling career was over, Kavanagh shifted his focus to being the best teammate he could be. He continued to attend practices and was one of the most vocal supporters on Calaveras’ side of the mat during dual meets.

“That’s just who I am,” Kavanagh said. “I went to every practice, even while I was injured, and I just stayed there, talked to the guys, and cheered them on during the matches. I just cheered them on the best I could, and I just had a great time with my team.”

Of course, Calaveras head coach Andrew Garcia would have loved to have had Kavanagh healthy and on the mat throughout his senior year, but his commitment to the team despite being sidelined came as no surprise to Garcia.

“Buddy was every coach’s dream,” Garcia said. “He supported the program, was a good teammate and remained supportive despite the injury and the bumps in the road. He’s got great character that will take him very far in life.”

Throwing caution to the wind

There really is no worse injury for a track and field thrower than an arm injury, and that’s what Kavanagh was dealing with. Yet after he had to forgo his senior wrestling season, Kavanagh didn’t want to have any excuses for why he didn’t throw for the track and field team in the spring.

With the goal of being able to throw at a high level by the time the track season began, Kavanagh spent the winter rehabbing his arm injury and was determined to end his Calaveras athletic career on a high note.

“I think that wrestling really put into perspective how bad my arm was,” Kavanagh said. “So then after that, I really got into rehab and building back the muscle that I used to have. It was not until the week I started throwing that my arm was almost back to full strength. After my wrestling season really didn’t go as planned, I figured I might as well just go all out and just do the best I can in track, and that’s what I tried to do. So, I went to the weight room, put in extra practice, stayed late and just tried my hardest, and it paid off.”

Kavanagh’s rehab yielded obvious results, as he collected eight first-place finishes in the shot put, which included a personal-best throw of 52 feet, 1.5 inches at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship meet. In the discus, he had seven first-place finishes and set a personal best of 154 feet, 10 inches during a home meet.

For Calaveras head track and field coach Bryan Harrison, there was nothing to worry about when Kavanagh was competing because he knew valuable points would be scored and Kavanagh would represent the team in a way that would make any coach proud.

“He’s one of those athletes who actually does what you ask him to do,” Harrison said. “He is just a really good kid. He’s just one of those guys who just goes out there, he’s not afraid to do the workouts and does the throws, and that’s what you want from an athlete. He goofs around like all the rest of the kids, but he is focused and he does go out there and do what he needs to do, and it shows in all of his competitions.”

After winning individual Mother Lode League titles in both the shot put and discus, Kavanagh returned to Hughes Stadium – the same place where he helped the football team win a section title – and collected two individual section titles with first-place throws despite running on fumes after showing swine and turkeys at the Calaveras County Fair during the week.

“At first I was really tired because I woke up at 4:30 a.m. to drive from the fairgrounds all the way down to Sacramento,” Kavanagh said. “It was during fair, so I had to wake up super early just to get to my coach’s house so we could make it there on time. But when I got there, I was loose, I was feeling good, I was warm, it just felt like a good day for throwing, and it was. I went out there and did my stuff and took first.”

He continued: “It just felt amazing. Going out there and just showing that all the hard work I’ve been doing the past two, three months for track is really paying off and going out there and winning at Hughes Stadium, the same place as football, I just had so much adrenaline, and it was just such a good time.”

Kavanagh then competed at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championship, where he missed out on representing Calaveras at the state meet in the shot put by just 3 inches.

“I was really disappointed,” Kavanagh said. “I could have performed better. I wasn’t feeling the right way to throw well that day. But I had a great time, and I’m so grateful that I was able to make it to Masters in the first place. But I felt like, for me personally, I left a little on the plate, and I wanted to go that far and prove that I was able to.”

No excuses

When Kavanagh looks back at his senior year, there won’t be much for him to complain about. Yes, there were struggles, hard times and disappointments, but he also figured out a way to make the best of every situation he faced.

And while Kavanagh is proud of what he accomplished on the football field and the track, what he’s even more proud of is what he accomplished in the classroom, which resulted in him being named to the Mother Lode League’s All-Academic team.

“For me, that was the most important thing,” Kavanagh said. “I was a student before an athlete. I had to make sure all my grades were up, all my assignments were done before I could even step on the field to play on Friday nights. My grades were really important because if you can’t keep your grades up, then I don’t think you should be able to be an athlete at the same time.”

Mossa watched Kavanagh excel on the football field and knows what he’s capable of in the classroom. Mossa is confident that whatever Kavanagh decides to do in life will be met with success.

“He’s got really high character,” Mossa said. “No matter what he decides he’s going to do in the real world, he’s going to go places and he’s going to be successful.”

While Kavanagh is no longer a Calaveras student-athlete, his athletic career is not over. In the fall, he will attend Butte College, where he will compete as a thrower for Butte’s track and field team. And while Kavanagh is looking forward to competing for Butte, there’s no question that he will miss being a football player.

“I wish I could play football, I just don’t think I have the stature and the size for it at the collegiate level,” Kavanagh said. “But I’m glad that I ended my football career with a win, a state championship, and I’m glad I get to go do athletics in college and actually still be an athlete and not just be in college.”

On the first day of his senior year, Kavanagh had no idea how the following 10 months would unfold. The one thing he knew for sure was that he was going to do as much as he could, and there would be no excuses along the way.

“Just do everything,” he said. “My goal was to just do the best I can in every sport and do anything I could possibly do. Any school event, any sporting event, anything I could go to, I wanted to do and just do the best I could and have fun doing it. Football was fun. Wrestling, I was hurt, which sucked, but I still tried to show up. I still tried to be there for everyone. And then track, obviously, I came out this year and had a good season. It was all great.”
