On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, heralding the 13 colonies’ separation from Great Britain and establishing the United States. John Adams wrote, “This will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
The first fireworks were used as early as 200 BC. The tradition of setting off fireworks on the Fourth of July began in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, during the first organized celebration of Independence Day. The ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies.
According to Cal Fire, “safe and sane” fireworks are allowed in Calaveras County this year, with the exception of the Ebbetts Pass area, where no fireworks are allowed. Sadly, the Ironstone Vineyard’s Fireworks are not taking place this year.
Whether your weekend will include barbecues, fireworks, music or sports, there is certainly no shortage of choices for ways to celebrate this Independence Weekend in Calaveras.
