Elk Grove Police continue to advance drone program

(FOX40.COM) — The Elk Grove Police Department is seeing further evolutions in its innovative Drone as a First Responder (DFR) Program that is leading the nation in law enforcement drone operation.

Launched in May, the police department DFR program has flown over 1000 flights.

The program has proven the ability to quickly locate, report and track suspects and guide ground resources effectively, the police department said.

When operating a drone the Federal Aviation Administration requires a two-person team, one person pilots the drone and the second provides a visual line of sight.

On Tuesday, the Elk Grove Police Department announced that they were given FAA approval to operate their DFR program without a second person providing a visual line of sight.

The human visual observer will be replaced by the department’s Detect and Avoid airspace observation technology that serves as an optical, acoustic and radar detection system for the drone.

“It is important to emphasize that the DFR program is used exclusively in response to calls for service, ensuring that drone operations are focused on enhancing safety and efficiency in Elk Grove,” the police department wrote in a social media post.
