Box Score The Chicago State women’s tennis team pushed DePaul to the sixth and final singles match where the Blue Demons pulled out a three-set win to sneak past the Cougars 4-3 Sunday afternoon at XS Tennis in Chicago. The Cougars won the doubles point as Ethel Li and Sofiya Sedovich teamed for a victory at No. 2 and, needing to win at No. 3 to win the team point, Katarina Dukic and Amina Taibi won 7-6 (7-5). In singles, Nia Cooper and Manuella Eloundou each won and the team victory hinged at the outcome of No. 2 singles where DePaul earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win.
lost to Illinois State 5-2 at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois Saturday afternoon. ISU swept doubles for the team point and won at No. 1 singles for a 2-0 lead. Chicago State answered with wins in the next two matches when freshman Nia Cooper won in straight sets at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1, followed by No. 5 Ethel Li who won win three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Cardinals won the last three matches, with two of three going three sets.
“I don’t think that DePaul expected us to come with the fight we brought,” head coach Jack Barton said. “I think they underestimated us a bit by scheduling us on a day they played a match before ours. They had to play resilient against us because we played very well. We just couldn’t pull out the big points and make them uncomfortable during rallies.
“As we get closer to the conference schedule we have to be willing to do what it takes to win the big points so we can close out matches with a win. I keep saying we are going in the right direction, which we are, but now it’s time to level up and win matches on key courts.”

The women’s tennis team will be back in action with a pair of home matches on Sunday, February 18, welcoming Northern Illinois to the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood at 10 a.m. followed by Purdue Northwest at 3:30 p.m.
