Sacramento City College Kondos Galley has opened its spring exhibit, “The Other Half,” an installment of artwork by five full-time art professors that includes a selection of paintings, printmaking, mixed media, ceramics and sculpture.
The Kondos Gallery opened in the 1930’s. Faculty member and noted California artist Gregory Kondos became director of the gallery In the mid 1970. Kondos retired from the college’s art department in1982 and the gallery was renamed in his honor.
“The Art Department has both the Kondos Gallery, and then we also have a permanent art collection,” said Professor Terry Peterson, chair of City College’s Art Department. “Those are two directions that were working on getting art in front of students.”
The new exhibition is part of the Art Department’s goal of engaging students in the works being produced by their teachers.
“The Kondos Gallery is finding new ways to create engagement, not only with the community at large, but with the students,” said Denise Benitas, gallery lead for the Kondos Gallery. “Typically, students will come in or they’ll be brought in by their faculty to look at the show, but I’m trying to create moments where students can actually sit with their work and really take it in.”
The exhibition runs through May 21. The gallery is open to the public from Monday to Thursday noon to 4 p.m. on the City College campus.
