FARGO — The last time North Dakota State struggled on defense like it did at the University of North Dakota last weekend was perhaps a 2005 defeat at California Poly. The Mustangs ran for 211 yards in the 37-6 victory in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
That was followed by a 20-14 defeat at home to California Davis, but at least the Bison defense showed some improvement, which was particularly evident in a shutout over Northern Colorado two weeks later. Today, NDSU hosts Western Illinois looking to restore some confidence on defense.
The Leathernecks have struggled on both sides of the ball in their 0-6 season. It will be the last appearance at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome as a Missouri Valley Football Conference team for the Western, who is joining the Ohio Valley Conference.
How do the reporters who cover Bison football for Forum Communications see it?
Jeff would like to dispel the notion he was around when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press, but he is on his third decade of reporting with Forum Communications. The son of a reporter and an English teacher, and the brother of a reporter, Jeff has worked at the Jamestown Sun, Bismarck Tribune and since 1990 The Forum, where he’s covered North Dakota State athletics since 1995.
Jeff has covered all nine of NDSU’s Division I FCS national football titles and has written three books: “Horns Up,” “North Dakota Tough” and “Covid Kids.” He is the radio host of “The Golf Show with Jeff Kolpack” April through August.
