On May 23, 2025, Aiden Cole was prepped for surgery.
Cole was almost two months removed from injuring his right elbow so severely during a pitching appearance that he required Tommy John surgery, which involved removing a ligament from his left hamstring and inserting it into his right arm.
Following the successful surgery, Cole began his road back to the mound. Over the summer months and into the fall, Cole did physical therapy and whatever he could to ensure he’d be pitching during his junior season at Bret Harte High School.
Cole’s dedication paid off, as he not only worked his way back into Bret Harte’s rotation, but he quickly inserted himself as the ace. Cole’s junior season on the mound was so dominant that he was viewed by Mother Lode League coaches as the top pitcher in the league.

One year after undergoing surgery, Cole was named the 2026 Mother Lode League’s Most Outstanding Pitcher.
“It definitely means a lot,” Cole said about receiving the award. “It’s definitely going to bring a lot of confidence for next season as well. When I figured out I was going to get Tommy John surgery, I told myself that I wanted to come back and have an MVP or MOP (Most Outstanding Pitcher) season, and I did that.”
After not being able to use his right arm for quite some time following the surgery, Cole did his best to follow the instructions of his doctor and physical therapist. Yet he couldn’t stop thinking about finally being able to throw a baseball. By the time he began his junior year in the fall, Cole had begun throwing, and he was determined to be an even better pitcher than he was before the surgery.
“It took a couple months in the field just being able to freely throw the ball and not feeling restraint,” Cole said. “I was throwing at four months and probably at the six-month mark after surgery, I was feeling good and back at it in bullpens and practice on the field.”

Cole is not the only one in the Bret Harte baseball program familiar with what it takes to return from Tommy John surgery. Head coach Beau Hintz suffered the same fate while a minor league pitcher. Hintz knew that Cole was willing to do whatever he could to return to form, but Hintz wasn’t about to let his star pitcher do too much too soon, which included implementing a pitch count early in the season.
“That was probably the toughest thing with Aiden for sure because he’s such a competitor,” Hintz said. “He wanted to come out guns-a-blazing, but he’s only throwing 30 pitches, 40 pitches. In his first three or four outings, we limited him to fastballs and changeups only, which for him is tough because he has other pitches, but it also is going to make him a better pitcher to learn how to use his fastball and learn how to really develop his changeup.”
Being on a limited pitch count was difficult for Cole, but he understood that it was for his own good.
“It was definitely hard having a pitch count because I just want to compete, and if I have a good outing going, I want to stay in and keep going as long as I can,” Cole said. “But I understood it was for my own good, for my arm to stay healthy longer.”

When it came to throwing only fastballs and changeups in the first couple of outings, Cole said, “I felt comfortable with it from the beginning. I was throwing just fastballs and changeups early in the season, but I would throw sliders in the bullpen, and I felt good with it. It was just mainly a safety concern just to stay off the breaking ball.”
In his first game back on the mound, Cole threw just 26 pitches in two innings on the road against Beyer, allowing two hits, no runs and two strikeouts. From there, Cole built up his pitch count and got better with each outing. Much to his surprise, his arm felt better than it did before the initial injury.
“It felt better since the surgery with way less soreness than usual in my back and shoulder,” Cole said.
Cole went on to pick up two victories over Linden, one over Big Valley Christian and one against Summerville. In the final game of the regular season, Cole and the Bullfrogs had a chance at winning the Mother Lode League title with a win over Summerville. Unfortunately, everything that could have gone wrong for Cole did go wrong, and he got tagged with the loss in a 10-6 road defeat to the Bears. That was the only league game in which Cole surrendered an earned run.

“It’s still sitting with me a little bit, but for the most part, I’ve gotten past it,” Cole said about the loss to Summerville. “Hopefully if we get in that situation again next year, we’ll have a better result afterward.”
After the rocky start against Summerville, Cole bounced back in a big way in Bret Harte’s playoff opener against Le Grand. The Bullfrogs beat the Bulldogs 10-0 in five innings, and Cole didn’t allow a hit. The playoff no-hitter was the first no-no of Cole’s career, and he knew he hadn’t allowed a hit long before the final out was recorded.
“I was pretty locked in on the fact that I did have a no-hitter, and also a perfect game until I gave up one walk,” Cole said. “But I definitely knew going into the last inning I was pitching that I was throwing a no-hitter.”
Cole finished his junior season with a 3-2 record while posting a 1.15 ERA. He recorded 30 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched and allowed just five earned runs all season. Hintz feels that one of Cole’s strengths on the mound is his ability to keep batters off balance, which results in easy defensive plays for his teammates.

“He’s got to be that ground-ball guy,” Hintz said. “He’ll get his strikeouts here and there, but attacking the strike zone and committing to every pitch that he throws, when he does that, he’s as good as it gets in this league.”
Cole wasn’t just a threat on the mound, as he was one of Bret Harte’s most productive hitters. He finished the season hitting .373 with 28 hits, scored 22 runs, recorded 13 RBIs, six doubles, one home run, walked eight times, got hit by pitches five times and stole three bases. When he wasn’t pitching, Cole could be found anywhere on the diamond, including behind the plate, at third base and at first base, and he finished with a fielding percentage of .937.
While Cole is thrilled to be back on the mound, he feels there is room for improvement, and he’s already thinking about ways to be an even more dominant pitcher in his senior season.
“I definitely could be a lot better,” Cole said. “Coming off surgery, there are some flaws and mechanics coming back, and I feel like I could be a way better pitcher next year than I was this year.”
