NORMAL, Ill.- The Missouri Valley Conference has announced the 2023 Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Teams, in conclusion of the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championship on October 27th, at Vaughn’s Gap Course in Nashville, TN hosted by Belmont.
Junoir Mathis Chavand and senior Charlie Wetzel both earn Cross Country Scholar-Athlete team. Chavand earned a 3.88 average while placing second at Missouri Valley Conference race with 24:31.75. At the NCAA Midwest Regional Chavand placed 17th with 30:59.5. Senior Charlie Wetzel earned a 3.93 average while he placed 11th at the conference race with a time of 25:00.73, while at the regional he placed 132nd with a time of 33:05.9.
Scholar-Athlete honors require athletes to meet performance standards, as they must finish in the first 20 runners at the conference championship and hold at least a cumulative 3.5 GPA and be in sophomore standings academically and athletically. The conference has chosen to raise the standard cumulative GPA in alignment with College Sports Communicators (formally known as CoSIDA) nomination standards, who has also raised the minimum cumulative GPA from 3.3 previously to 3.5. For top honors, the Scholar-Athlete of the Year is the top finisher that meets the qualifications for the team.
